With the new year rapidly approaching, most businesses already have begun their planning and strategy meetings for 2020. As a small business, one of the things that get overlooked is network security. With so many other things to budget for and plan, network security gets put on the back burner. It’s so easy to forget about if things are flowing smoothly and you’ve suffered no serious issues. Unfortunately, cyber-attacks continue to grow in prevalence and hackers grow smarter and find more holes to exploit. Discussing key network security issues for 2020 is essential for your business.
- Phishing – So many forms of phishing continue to develop. Scammers and hackers grow more creative with the ways they communicate with you and attempt to steal your information. Email remains the most prevalent form of phishing but text messages, phone calls, and even social media messages all can be used as phishing platforms. Phishing is expected to continue to grow across other platforms other than email in 2020. Remember, phishing tries to play on your emotions and cause you to make an impulsive decision to give your information to them. We all have received the, “Your electric bill is past due” phone calls from your “electric company” trying to scare you into acting. Legitimate companies won’t use scare tactics and usually have identity verification processes before disclosing any personal information.
- Cyber Security Spending – As technology changes, so does the need to spend on cybersecurity. Studies show companies spend money on software and the tools needed to defend their networks, thinking that state of the art equipment protects their networks from cyber-attacks. While the programs and tools are necessary, you also need the technical expertise of IT professionals to secure your network fully. Make sure to invest in both the tools and the people needed to protect your network.
- Emphasis on Data Privacy – Starting in January 2020, the California Consumer Privacy Act will begin enforcement. It cracks down on the standards needed to protect consumer data and personal information. With the GDPR implementation in 2018 and now the CCPA in 2020, we expect even more legislation on data privacy in 2020.
